Open Gmail links in a specific Chrome profile on Mac

Why give it its own rule

Links to Gmail messages and searches (mail.google.com/mail/u/0/...) open whichever inbox sits at that account slot in the browser. With work and personal Gmail signed in to the same browser, /u/0 can point at the wrong mailbox and the message looks like it has vanished.

How to set it up

  1. Install ChooseBrowser and pick it in System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser.
  2. In ChooseBrowser, add a rule for the hosts below and choose the browser and profile (profiles of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Chromium need a one-time local setup in the app).
  3. From then on, these links open straight in that browser from any app; links without a rule show the picker.

Hosts to add

  • mail.google.com

Add a rule for mail.google.com that opens the Chrome profile where your main Gmail account is signed in. Gmail picks the inbox by the /u/ number inside that profile, so keeping one Google account per profile makes every message link land in the right mailbox.

Check that it works

Open a Gmail message link and confirm the profile opens with the expected address on the top-right avatar; then open a link to another Google site such as docs.google.com and confirm it follows its own rule or shows the picker.
